What's the difference between thread seal tape and pipe wrap tape?
Thread seal tape (Teflon/PTFE) wraps around pipe threads to create a pressure-tight seal at connections. Pipe wrap tape is a thick, adhesive-backed tape applied to the exterior of pipes to prevent corrosion and moisture damage. They serve completely different purposes and are not interchangeable.
How many wraps of thread seal tape do I need for a leak-proof seal?
For high-density PTFE tape, 3-4 wraps in the direction of the threads is sufficient. Standard density requires 5-6 wraps. Gas lines need 4-5 wraps of gas-rated tape. Over-wrapping can prevent proper thread engagement and cause leaks. Always wrap clockwise facing the pipe end.
Can I use standard thread seal tape on gas lines?
Only if the tape is specifically rated for gas applications. Look for yellow gas-rated PTFE tape that meets UL 31RO or AGA standards. Standard white tape for water may degrade when exposed to fuel gases, creating leak paths. Never use pipe wrap tape on gas threads.
Is thicker tape always better for sealing pipe threads?
No. Excessive thickness prevents proper thread engagement, leaving connections loose and prone to failure. High-density thin tapes (3.5 mil) provide better seals than thick, low-density tapes. The key is material quality and proper wrap count, not raw thickness.
How should I store unused pipe tape for maximum shelf life?
Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. UV radiation degrades PTFE and adhesives. Keep rolls in their original packaging or a sealed container. Properly stored tape lasts 3-5 years. Discard if you notice discoloration, cracking, or loss of flexibility.
When must I use pipe wrap tape instead of thread seal tape?
Pipe wrap tape is required for underground metal pipes, exterior exposed piping, and any application where moisture or soil contact causes corrosion. It provides external protection, not thread sealing. Use it on the pipe body, never on threads. Thread seal tape is for connections only.
