How much weight can drywall-mounted barn door hardware hold?
When properly mounted to studs, quality hardware supports 180-250 lbs depending on the kit. The drywall itself adds zero structural support. Always check your door weight first—solid-core doors often weigh 100-150 lbs. Add a 50% safety margin when selecting hardware.
What's the difference between I-shape and J-shape hangers?
I-shape hangers use three mounting bolts per hanger, distributing weight across more points—better for drywall. J-shape hangers have a cleaner look with two bolts but require precise stud alignment. For drywall installations, I-hangers offer more mounting flexibility and stability.
Do I need a floor guide for my barn door?
Yes. A floor guide prevents the door from swinging away from the wall, which puts dangerous leverage on the track and studs. It also reduces noise and wear. Choose a low-profile guide that mounts with one screw into the floor or baseboard to minimize installation hassle.
How long should the track be compared to my door width?
Track length should equal twice your door width minus 2 inches. For a 36" door, you need 70" of track (36 x 2 = 72, minus 2 = 70). This ensures the door completely clears the opening. Always round up to the next standard track length—never cut it short.
Should I install a header board behind the track?
