Can I install a bike pulley on a finished drywall ceiling?
No. All systems require mounting to solid wood or metal joists. Drywall alone cannot support 85-100 lbs. Use a stud finder to locate joists and mount directly with lag bolts.
What ceiling height works for these pulley systems?
Most require 10-16 foot ceilings for full functionality. For 8-9 foot garages, choose compact systems and expect reduced lift height. Measure from floor to bottom of joist before ordering.
Are auto-locking systems worth the extra cost?
Absolutely. Our drop tests proved auto-locking prevents accidents if you lose grip. In car repair garages where you're working underneath, this safety feature is essential insurance.
Can one person operate these hoists alone?
Yes, with proper pulley ratio. A 4:1 ratio lets one person lift 100 lbs with 25 lbs of force. However, guiding the bike while pulling requires practice. Two people make first attempts safer.
Will these hold e-bikes that weigh 70+ pounds?
Select systems rated for 100 lbs. The Delta Cycle Pro and heavy-duty generic hoist both handled 70-80 lb e-bikes reliably in our tests. The 85 lb rated systems work but offer less safety margin.
Can I store other items like ladders or kayaks?
Yes. Any system with adjustable straps can secure ladders, kayaks, or cargo boxes. Verify width capacity and consider foam padding to prevent damage during lifting.
