What's the difference between lug bolts and lug nuts?
Lug bolts thread directly into the hub, common on European cars. Lug nuts thread onto studs protruding from the hub, standard on domestic and Asian vehicles. They are not interchangeable and require different wheel mounting designs.
Can I reuse my old bolts with new aftermarket wheels?
Only if thread size, seat type, and shank length match perfectly. Aftermarket wheels often require longer shanks or different seat angles. Using incorrect bolts causes wheel vibration, improper seating, and potential hub damage.
How do I measure bolt shank length correctly?
Measure from the seat surface (where it contacts the wheel) to the end of the threaded portion. Do not include the head in measurement. Compare this to your wheel's mounting pad thickness plus required thread engagement—minimum 6 full threads.
What maintenance do lug bolts require?
Clean threads annually with a wire brush and apply light anti-seize compound. Inspect for corrosion, stripped heads, or stretched threads during tire rotations. Replace any bolt that doesn't torque properly or shows visible damage.
