What's the difference between a combination square and a try square?

How do I test my square's accuracy at home?
Mark a line across a board, flip the square, and mark again from the same starting point. Parallel lines indicate accuracy. If they diverge, your square is out of true. Repeat after dropping the tool to check for damage.
Should I get a 12-inch or 7-inch square for general use?
