Adhesives and Sealants — FAQ
Can construction adhesive replace nails and screws?
For many non-structural applications, yes. Quality adhesives exceed 500 PSI, creating bonds stronger than mechanical fasteners alone. However, building codes often require both adhesive and mechanical fasteners for load-bearing connections.
How long should I clamp glued materials?
Minimum 30 minutes for fast-grab formulas, 2-4 hours for standard adhesives. Polyurethane achieves handling strength in 8 hours but requires 24 hours for full cure. Vertical applications need support until initial tack develops.
What's the difference between polyurethane and water-based adhesives?
Polyurethane bonds to any material, fills gaps better, and cures waterproof. Water-based adhesives cost less, clean with soap and water, but struggle with non-porous surfaces and lack gap-filling strength.
Can I use construction adhesive in cold weather?
Most polyurethane formulas work down to 0°F. Water-based products require temperatures above 40°F to cure properly. Always check manufacturer specifications before cold-weather application.
How do I remove excess adhesive before it cures?
Water-based adhesives wipe clean with damp cloths. Polyurethane requires mineral spirits or acetone—test solvents on scrap material first. Cured polyurethane must be cut or sanded off.
Why do some adhesives come in clear vs. colored formulas?
Clear adhesives remain invisible on light materials and finished surfaces. Gray or tan formulas blend with concrete and lumber, hiding imperfections. Color choice depends on visibility and aesthetic requirements.
