Adhesives and Sealants — FAQ
Can construction adhesive replace nails or screws?
Polyurethane adhesives like Loctite PL Premium meet building codes for certain applications (subfloors, shear walls) but most require mechanical fasteners as supplemental support. Always check local codes—adhesive alone rarely passes inspection for structural loads.
How do I remove excess adhesive before it cures?
Latex-based formulas wipe clean with water and a damp cloth. Polyurethane requires mineral spirits or acetone—wipe immediately, as it skins over in 10-15 minutes. Cured polyurethane must be cut or sanded; it won't dissolve with solvents.
Will construction adhesive bond painted surfaces?
No. Adhesives require direct substrate contact. Paint acts as a release agent, reducing bond strength by 80%+. Always strip paint or mechanically abrade to bare material. For painted trim, use finish nails plus adhesive on unpainted backside.
What's the shelf life after opening?
Unopened tubes last 12-18 months. After opening, polyurethane adhesives skin over in 1-2 weeks if not sealed properly. Use a caulking tube cap and store in cool, dry place. Squeeze tubes with threaded caps maintain freshness longer—up to 6 months.
Can I apply adhesive in cold weather?
Polyurethane formulas cure down to 0°F but take 2-3x longer. Latex-based adhesives require 40°F minimum and fail if frozen before curing. Store tubes indoors overnight and warm to 70°F before application for best results in winter conditions.
Is stronger adhesive always better?
No. Over-spec'ing wastes money and creates problems. For foam board insulation, high-strength solvents can melt the substrate. For temporary braces, fast-grab formulas are overkill. Match adhesive strength to project requirements—structural joints need 500+ PSI, trim work needs 200 PSI.
