Flooring — FAQ
Can cork underlayment be used directly under tile?
Yes, but only with cementitious thin-set mortars. Never use with organic mastic adhesives as cork resins can interfere with curing. Always confirm compatibility with your specific product datasheet.
How thick should cork underlayment be for tile?
Minimum 6mm for standard residential tile. Increase to 12mm for wet areas like bathrooms or over problematic concrete subfloors with moisture concerns.
Does cork underlayment need a vapor barrier?
Natural cork has inherent moisture resistance (0.5-1.0 perm rating), but concrete slabs require 0.3 perm or lower. Always install a 6-mil poly vapor barrier beneath cork on below-grade concrete.
Is cork underlayment suitable for radiant floor heating?
Only with explicit manufacturer approval. Most cork products require additional thermal break layers between heating elements and underlayment to prevent overheating and adhesive failure.
How long does cork underlayment need to acclimate?
Minimum 48 hours in the installation environment at 65-85°F with 35-65% humidity. Failure to acclimate causes expansion gaps and uneven tile surfaces.
Can I install cork underlayment over existing tile?
No—existing tile creates an unstable substrate. Remove old tile completely, level the subfloor, then apply underlayment. Never install new tile over old tile with underlayment in between.
