Fasteners and Hardware โ FAQ
Can I use regular deck screws for building cabinets?
While possible, it's not recommended. Deck screws have aggressive threads that split hardwood face frames, and their exterior coatings can interfere with stains. Cabinet-specific screws like GRK have finer threads and washer heads designed for furniture-grade work.
What's the ideal screw length for cabinet face frames?
1-1/2" screws work best for face frames. They provide 3/4" penetration into the second piece without blowing through typical 3/4" stock. For carcass assembly where you have material overlaps, use 2" screws for secure holding.
Star drive vs. Phillips head: Which is better for cabinets?
Star (Torx) drives are superior. They transfer more torque, resist cam-out, and allow one-handed driving. Phillips heads strip easily in hardwoods and require constant downward pressure. Professional cabinet makers exclusively use star drive fasteners.
Do I need coated screws for indoor cabinets?
No. Bare steel or black phosphate screws work fine for interior use. Exterior coatings like epoxy or ceramic can actually cause finishing problems if they contact bare wood. Save coated screws for shop furniture or outdoor projects.
How many screws do I need per cabinet?
Plan for 50-75 screws per base cabinet: 16 for the face frame, 24 for carcass assembly, and 12-20 for drawer guides and hardware. A 100-pack of GRK cabinet screws handles one base and one wall cabinet with spare.
Why are GRK screws worth the premium price?
GRK's self-tapping design eliminates pre-drilling, saving 15-20 minutes per cabinet. The consistent quality reduces stripped heads and splitting. For professionals, the time savings and reduced callbacks justify the cost within one kitchen job.
