How many hinges does each door need?
Doors up to 60 inches tall require two hinges. Taller or solid-core doors need three hinges for proper weight distribution. Fire-rated doors over 90 inches need four hinges per code.
What's the difference between 5/8" and 1/4" radius?
Radius refers to the rounded corner profile. 5/8" radius is modern standard for pre-hung doors. 1/4" radius appears on older homes and some custom jambs. Mismatched radius leaves visible gaps or requires wood filling.
Can I replace hinges without removing the door?
Yes — replace hinges one at a time starting at the top. Support the door with a shim or wedge under the knob side. Remove and replace the top hinge, then middle, then bottom. Never remove multiple hinges simultaneously.
Are self-closing hinges adjustable?
Most residential self-closing hinges have fixed spring tension. Commercial grade versions offer adjustable tension via hex key. If your door slams, install a soft-close damper hinge instead of adjusting spring force.
Which finish lasts longest?
Satin nickel and oil-rubbed bronze finishes with PVD coating last 20+ years indoors. Matte black varies — powder-coated lasts longer than painted. Avoid bright brass in coastal areas; salt air causes pitting within 2-3 years.
Do I need special hinges for solid-core doors?
Solid-core doors weigh 80-100 lbs versus 25-35 lbs for hollow-core. Use three hinges rated for 150 lbs minimum. Ball bearing hinges reduce wear on heavy doors. Never use lightweight zinc hinges — they sag and bind within months.
