Can I use regular twist drill bits on ceramic tile?
No. Standard twist bits crack and chip tile. Always use carbide-tipped or diamond-coated bits designed for masonry. The specialized tip geometry scores the surface before cutting, preventing catastrophic cracks.
Which is better: carbide or diamond tile bits?
Carbide excels in ceramic and soft porcelain at lower cost. Diamond dominates hard porcelain, glass, and stone with superior longevity. For occasional ceramic use, carbide suffices. For porcelain or professional work, choose diamond.
Do I need water when drilling tile?
Not with dry-rated bits. Water extends bit life and controls dust but complicates vertical drilling. Modern dry diamond bits perform excellently without cooling. If drilling natural stone or for extended periods, water helps.
Why does my tile keep cracking when I drill?
Excessive speed, downward pressure, or dull bits cause cracks. Start at low RPM (400-600) with light pressure. Let the bit grind, don't force it. Use a center punch or masking tape to prevent wandering on the glaze.
What drill speed works best for tile?
Run carbide bits at 600-800 RPM for ceramic, 400-600 RPM for porcelain. Diamond bits prefer 800-1200 RPM. Always start slower and increase gradually. High speeds generate heat that cracks tile and dulls bits prematurely.
How many holes can a tile drill bit make?
Quality carbide bits drill 20-50 holes in porcelain before dulling. Diamond bits can exceed 100 holes in hard materials. Budget bits may manage only 5-10 holes. Always stop if you see excessive chipping or smell burning.
