How many times can you reuse a canvas drop cloth?
Quality cotton canvas drop cloths survive 10-15 machine washes when properly maintained. Avoid fabric softeners and dry on low heat. Replace when fabric thins enough to see light through or paint stops absorbing.
Should I tape down my drop cloth?
Tape edges with painter's tape on hard floors to prevent slipping and gaps. On carpet, tuck edges under baseboards instead—tape can leave residue. For high-traffic areas, overlap cloths 12 inches and tape the seam.
What's better: canvas or plastic drop cloths?
Canvas absorbs spills and prevents tracking; plastic contains spills but creates slip hazards and tears easily. Use canvas for interior painting and plastic only as a temporary moisture barrier under canvas for exterior work.
Can canvas drop cloths be cut to size?
Yes, cut with sharp scissors or a utility knife. Double-stitched edges prevent unraveling, but cut edges will fray over time. For permanent custom sizes, hem cut edges with a sewing machine using heavy-duty thread.
Why do my drop cloths smell after washing?
Paint residue and mildew cause odors. Wash with hot water and add 1 cup of white vinegar to the rinse cycle. Dry completely before storage—damp canvas develops mildew quickly. Sun-drying helps eliminate stubborn paint fumes.
Do canvas drop cloths shrink after washing?
