What’s the difference between electrical tape and duct tape?
Electrical tape uses PVC backing rated for 600V+ insulation and flame retardance. Duct tape’s cloth fibers conduct electricity and adhesive melts under heat. Never substitute—electrical failures and fire risk are immediate dangers.
Can I use electrical tape to repair a cut extension cord?
For temporary fixes only. Proper repair requires cutting, stripping, and using wire nuts with tape as secondary insulation. Replace the cord for permanent safety; taped repairs fail under flexing and moisture.
How many wraps make a safe wire splice?
Minimum 3/4-inch overlap with 3-4 tight layers. Stretch tape 50% while wrapping for conformability. Finish with 2 layers beyond the wire nut base. More layers add bulk without improving safety.
Why does my electrical tape keep peeling off?
Surface contamination (oil, dust) or wrong temperature rating. Clean wires with alcohol before wrapping. Use all-weather tape for attics/garages. Cheap adhesive fails within months—upgrade to rubber resin.
Is colored electrical tape as safe as black?
Yes, if UL 600V rated. Colors help identify circuits: white=neutral, green=ground, red/black=hot. Never use non-electrical colored tapes like masking or painter’s tape—they lack insulation rating.
How long does electrical tape last?
Quality tape lasts 5-10 years indoors. UV exposure degrades adhesive in 1-2 years outdoors. Inspect annually for cracking, flagging edges, or stickiness loss. Replace at first sign of deterioration.
