What ton rating do I need for my vehicle?
Select stands rated for at least half your vehicle's total weight. For a 4,000 lb sedan, 2-ton (4,000 lb) stands work, but 3-ton provides a safer margin. Always check your owner's manual for recommended support ratings.
Are jack stands under $100 actually safe?
Yes, when ANSI certified and used correctly. Our testing showed budget stands meeting safety standards, but avoid no-name brands. Stick to established manufacturers and never exceed rated capacity. Inspect stands before each use for damage.
Can I use just one jack stand?
Never. Always use jack stands in pairs at minimum, positioned at the same height on level ground. For axle work, support both ends of the vehicle. A single stand creates a dangerous pivot point that can cause the vehicle to shift and fall.
What's better: pin-lock or ratchet stands?
Pin-lock stands are mechanically simpler and nearly foolproof. Ratchet stands are faster and more common. The best budget option is a ratchet stand with a secondary locking pin for redundancy. Whichever you choose, ensure positive engagement every time.
How often should I replace jack stands?
Inspect stands annually for rust, cracks, or bent components. Replace immediately if you notice pawl wear, pin holes elongating, or base deformation. With proper care, quality steel stands last 10+ years. Toss them after any overload incident.
Can automotive stands be used for house leveling?
No. Automotive jack stands are designed for dynamic vehicle loads, not static structural support. House jacks like the VEVOR posts are engineered for 18,000+ lb loads and meet building code requirements. Using car stands for structural work is dangerous and illegal.
