What's the difference between a floor jack and jack stands?
Floor jacks lift vehicles; jack stands hold them up safely. Never work under a vehicle supported only by a hydraulic jack. Jacks can fail suddenly—stands provide mechanical, load-bearing support with locking mechanisms. Use both: jack to lift, stands to support.
How many jack stands do I need for a job?
Use two stands for lifting one end (front or rear). For full vehicle support, use four stands. Always place stands under manufacturer-specified lift points, never under suspension components or body panels. A pair of stands is minimum; buy two pairs for complete flexibility.
Only with load-distribution plates. Asphalt softens in heat and can cause stands to sink and tilt. Use 12"x12" plywood or steel plates under each stand base. Gravel is inherently unstable—avoid unless compacted and leveled with solid plates. Concrete is ideal.
What weight rating do I need for my truck?
Calculate your truck's gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) from the door jamb sticker. Choose stands rated for at least 75% of GVWR. Most half-ton trucks need 3-ton stands; three-quarter and one-ton trucks require 6-ton stands. When in doubt, go heavier.
How often should I inspect my jack stands?
Inspect before every use. Check for bent frames, cracked welds, worn saddle pads, and smooth ratchet operation. Lubricate pivot points annually. If a stand has been overloaded or dropped, retire it immediately. Most quality stands last 10+ years with proper care.
Are aluminum jack stands worth the extra cost?
For mobile mechanics or frequent transport, yes—aluminum stands weigh 40-50% less. For static garage use, steel offers better value and equal safety. Aluminum resists corrosion better but costs 2-3x more. Both materials meet the same safety standards when certified.
