Flooring — FAQ
Can I use foam underlayment under porcelain tile?
Yes, but only with compression-resistant foams rated for tile. Standard foam may compress under heavy porcelain tiles, causing lippage. Always verify manufacturer specifications before installation.
How thick should underlayment be for tile?
1-2mm is ideal for most tile installations. Thinner profiles prevent height mismatches at transitions while providing sufficient sound dampening without compromising structural support.
Does foam underlayment prevent cracked tiles?
It reduces cracking from subfloor movement by absorbing minor shifts. However, it won't fix major structural issues—proper subfloor preparation remains critical for tile longevity.
Is vapor barrier necessary under tile?
Essential in moisture-prone areas like bathrooms and basements. Choose underlayments with integrated barriers or add separate polyethylene sheeting to prevent water damage.
Can I install tile directly over underlayment?
Only with underlayments explicitly approved for tile. Never use standard laminate underlayments—they lack the rigidity needed for tile adhesion and may cause failure over time.
How do I join underlayment seams for tile?
Use manufacturer-recommended seam tape designed for tile applications. Avoid standard tapes that may off-gas and compromise thinset adhesion beneath tiles.
