Can I install ceiling storage on drywall alone?
Never mount overhead storage directly to drywall. All racks must anchor into ceiling joists or trusses rated for the load. Use a stud finder to locate joists, which are typically 16 or 24 inches apart. If joists don't align with mounting holes, add perpendicular blocking or consult a professional for reinforcement.
How much weight can I safely store on a 450lb-rated rack?
The 450lb rating assumes perfect installation into solid joists with weight evenly distributed. For safety, limit loads to 360lbs (80% of rating) in real-world use. This equals six 27-gallon totes at 40lbs each plus 120lbs of additional gear. Always check joist condition and use all provided lag bolts.
Do I need to add plywood on top of the storage platform?
