Adhesives and Sealants โ FAQ
What's the difference between construction adhesive and silicone sealant?
Construction adhesives create rigid, high-strength bonds for structural applications. Silicone sealants remain flexible for sealing gaps and accommodating movement, with lower bond strength.
Can I use construction adhesive instead of nails or screws?
Yes, many modern adhesives exceed fastener strength for certain applications. However, building codes often require mechanical fasteners plus adhesive for structural loads.
How long should I clamp or brace glued pieces?
Instant-grab formulas need 30 minutes. Standard polyurethane requires 2-4 hours of bracing. Full cure for maximum strength occurs in 24 hours regardless of tack time.
Will construction adhesive bond painted surfaces?
Most adhesives bond poorly to paint. Sand through paint to bare substrate for critical joints. Some polyurethane formulas can penetrate thin paint layers.
Is clear or white adhesive better?
Clear remains invisible on glass, tile, and stained wood. White shows less on painted surfaces and allows visual confirmation of coverage. Performance is identical.
Can construction adhesive be used outdoors?
Polyurethane adhesives are waterproof and UV-resistant for exterior use. Check the label for 'interior/exterior' rating. Silicone sealants excel in wet outdoor conditions.
