Can these kits install ceramic tile?
These kits are designed for floating floors (laminate, LVP, engineered hardwood) not ceramic tile. However, the contour gauge and knee pads assist with tile layout and underlayment prep. For ceramic, you'll need a tile cutter, trowel, and grout float.
What's the difference between tapping block types?
Solid blocks provide uniform force distribution and last longer. Hollow blocks are lighter but crack under heavy use. Look for blocks with handles for better control and non-marring surfaces that won't damage flooring finishes.
How many spacers do I need?
Calculate your room's perimeter in feet and divide by two. Add 10% for spares. A 12x15 foot room (54 linear feet) needs roughly 30 spacers. Large open-concept spaces benefit from 60+ spacers to maintain consistent gaps.
Are contour gauges necessary?
Contour gauges aren't essential but save significant time when cutting around door jambs, pipes, and irregular walls. They eliminate guesswork and reduce material waste. For simple rectangular rooms, you can skip this tool.
Can I use a regular hammer instead?
Never use a metal hammer directly on flooring. It will dent and damage planks. If you must use a hammer, place a sturdy block of wood between the hammer and flooring. A rubber mallet provides controlled, non-marring force.
What's the most important tool?
The pull bar is critical for closing end joints against walls where tapping blocks can't reach. A sturdy, well-designed pull bar with good leverage saves hours of frustration. Invest in the best pull bar you can afford.
