Adhesives and Sealants โ FAQ
Can I use construction adhesive instead of thinset mortar for tile?
Construction adhesive works for small repairs and vertical applications but lacks the compressive strength of thinset for floor installations. Use adhesives for backsplashes and wall accents; stick with thinset for floors and wet-area walls.
How long does heavy-duty construction adhesive take to dry on tile?
Handling strength develops in 20-30 minutes for most formulas, but full cure requires 24 hours. Avoid water exposure and loading during the cure period. Polyurethane adhesives may need 48 hours for maximum bond strength.
Will construction adhesive stick to existing tile or glazed surfaces?
Most heavy-duty adhesives bond to glazed surfaces after light sanding with 80-grit paper. Clean thoroughly with alcohol to remove contaminants. Polyurethane formulas offer the best adhesion to non-porous surfaces.
Is construction adhesive waterproof enough for shower walls?
Only 100% polyurethane-based adhesives provide reliable waterproofing for showers. Look for ASTM C557 compliance and zero VOC certification. Acrylic adhesives fail under constant moisture exposure.
Can I grout over construction adhesive?
Yes, once fully cured. Ensure adhesive doesn't squeeze up between tiles where it can interfere with grout bonding. Leave proper grout joints and clean excess adhesive before it skins over.
What's the difference between polyurethane and standard construction adhesive?
Polyurethane adhesives chemically cure using moisture, creating stronger, flexible, waterproof bonds. Standard adhesives dry by solvent evaporation, remaining rigid and vulnerable to moisture. Polyurethane costs more but delivers professional results.
