Adhesives and Sealants — FAQ
What's the difference between construction adhesive and wood glue?
Construction adhesives are heavier-bodied, gap-filling formulas for structural bonding. Wood glue (PVA) works best on tight-fitting joints. Adhesives handle outdoor exposure and load-bearing better.
How long should I wait before removing clamps?
Most heavy-duty adhesives achieve handling strength in 30 minutes to 2 hours. However, wait 24 hours for full cure before stressing the joint. Instant-grab formulas may need only 10-15 minutes.
Can I sand and paint over construction adhesive?
Yes, once fully cured. Polyurethane adhesives can be sanded, stained, and painted. Remove any uncured adhesive first with mineral spirits. Test paint compatibility on a small area.
Is construction adhesive waterproof?
Premium polyurethane formulas are fully waterproof. Check for ASTM D3498 certification. Hybrid polymer adhesives are water-resistant but may degrade with prolonged submersion.
How do I calculate how much adhesive I need?
A 10 oz cartridge covers approximately 30 linear feet of 1/4 inch bead. For subfloors, estimate one cartridge per 50 square feet. Buy 10% extra for waste and learning curve.
Can construction adhesive be removed after curing?
Cured adhesive requires mechanical removal—sanding, scraping, or cutting. Use a heat gun to soften it first. Mineral spirits only work on uncured product. Prevention is easier than removal.
