Do I need a flooring kit if I'm only installing one room?
Yes. A kit ensures you have the right tools to avoid damaging expensive flooring. Buying tools individually costs more, and household hammers will crack planks. A basic kit pays for itself by preventing mistakes.
What's the difference between a tapping block and a pull bar?
A tapping block closes long side joints by tapping planks horizontally. A pull bar closes end joints against walls where you can't swing a mallet. You need both for proper installation.
How many spacers do I actually need?
Plan for one spacer every 2-3 feet along walls. A 10x10 room needs about 20 spacers. Buy a kit with at least 30 spacers to avoid washing and reusing them mid-project, which slows you down.
Can I use a regular hammer instead of the mallet in these kits?
Never. Regular hammers concentrate force in a small area, cracking laminate and LVP edges. Flooring mallets have rubber faces that distribute impact and prevent damage. This is the #1 beginner mistake.
Are contour gauges worth the extra cost for beginners?
If your room has doorways, pipes, or irregular walls, yes. Contour gauges eliminate guesswork when tracing cuts. Beginners typically waste 2-3 planks learning freehand cuts. The gauge pays for itself quickly.
Should I buy a repair kit at the same time as an installation kit?
Wait. Install your floor first, then assess if you need repairs. Most beginners don't damage planks during installation when using proper tools. Buy a repair kit later if you have pets, kids, or need to fix existing floors.
