What's the minimum tool set I need to install laminate flooring?
You need a rubber mallet, pull bar, tapping block, and at least 20 spacers. A utility knife and tape measure are also essential but often sold separately. Avoid using a regular hammer—it damages click-lock edges.
Can I use these kits for luxury vinyl plank (LVP) installation?
Yes, most kits work for both laminate and LVP. The tapping force required is similar. However, rigid core LVP benefits from a heavier mallet (18-20 oz) to overcome tighter click mechanisms. Check manufacturer recommendations.
Do I really need 40+ spacers, or is that overkill?
For rooms over 200 square feet, 40 spacers save significant time. You can set all walls before laying planks, avoiding constant repositioning. For small bathrooms, 20 spacers suffice. More spacers equal faster, more consistent expansion gaps.
Why not just use a regular hammer instead of a rubber mallet?
Rubber mallets distribute force evenly and absorb rebound, preventing damage to plank edges. Hammers concentrate force and can crack the wear layer or break click-lock tabs. The $15 mallet cost prevents $100+ in ruined planks.
How important is the tapping block quality?
Critical. Cheap blocks split or compress, transferring uneven force to planks and causing height discrepancies. Solid plastic blocks with handles provide consistent, controlled strikes. Replace any block that shows cracks immediately.
Should I buy a repair kit at the same time as an installation kit?
Yes. Even careful installers create minor scratches or chip corners. Having repair wax and markers on hand lets you fix damage while planks are acclimated and accessible. Waiting means hunting for matching colors later.
