What's the difference between spike and core aeration for patios?
Spike aerators punch solid holes into soil, which can actually increase compaction around holes. Core aerators extract 2-3 inch plugs of soil, physically removing compaction and allowing air/water infiltration. For patios with heavy foot traffic, core aeration delivers superior long-term results.
Can I damage my patio pavers or concrete with a lawn aerator?
Yes. Metal spikes can chip concrete and dislodge paver sand if struck directly. Always maintain 2-3 inches clearance from hard edges. Manual aerators offer better control than rolling units near boundaries. Consider using a board as a barrier when working flush against patios.
How often should I aerate the lawn around my patio?
High-traffic patio transition zones need aeration 2-3 times yearly: spring, early summer, and fall. The rest of your lawn typically needs annual aeration. Focus on the 3-4 foot perimeter where foot traffic compacts soil most severely, creating a barrier that prevents water runoff onto your patio.
Are aerator shoes effective for small patio areas?
Aerator shoes work for superficial aeration but rarely penetrate beyond 1-2 inches, even with heavy users. They're convenient for tiny patios under 100 sq ft or for maintaining previously aerated soil. For initial compaction relief, dedicated manual or rolling aerators significantly outperform shoes.
Should I water before aerating my patio lawn?
Water 1-2 days before aerating if soil is dry. Moist soil (not muddy) allows spikes to penetrate fully with less effort. Dry, hard soil bends spikes and exhausts the user. However, avoid aerating saturated soilβit compacts rather than perforates. The screwdriver test: if you can push a screwdriver 3 inches in, conditions are right.
Can I use a rolling aerator on a sloped patio area?
Lightweight manual rolling aerators work on gentle slopes under 10 degrees. Steeper slopes cause uneven penetration and safety issues. For sloped patio perimeters, manual spike or core aerators provide controlled, safe operation. Always aerate across slopes, not up and down, to prevent soil displacement.
