What's the difference between RGB, RGBWW, and RGBCW smart bulbs?
RGB uses red, green, and blue LEDs to create colors but produces poor whites. RGBWW adds warm and cool white LEDs for natural white light (2700K-6500K). RGBCW includes cold white for brighter daylight tones (5000K+). Choose RGBWW for living spaces, RGBCW for task lighting.
Do I need a hub for these smart bulbs?
No. All bulbs tested connect directly to WiFi or Bluetooth without proprietary hubs. Matter-certified bulbs may benefit from a Thread border router for improved reliability, but it's optional. Alexa-only bulbs work seamlessly with Echo devices acting as hubs.
Can I use LED smart bulbs outdoors?
Only if rated for damp or wet locations. Indoor-rated bulbs will fail in moisture. For covered porches, verify the IP rating (IP44 minimum). Extreme cold below -4°F can reduce brightness and connectivity. Always check manufacturer specifications before outdoor installation.
What is Matter and why does it matter?
Matter is a universal smart home standard that ensures devices work across Alexa, Google, Apple, and Samsung platforms simultaneously. Matter bulbs won't become obsolete if you switch ecosystems. They also enable local control without cloud dependency, improving response times and privacy.
How many smart bulbs do I need per room?
A standard 12x12 foot room needs 2-3 800-lumen bulbs for adequate illumination. Larger living rooms (15x20 feet) require 4-5 bulbs. Consider 1000+ lumen bulbs for kitchens and bathrooms where task lighting is critical. Start with one bulb to test placement before buying multiples.
Will smart bulbs work when my internet is down?
WiFi bulbs lose remote control but often retain local Bluetooth functionality. Some apps offer local network control without internet. Matter bulbs with Thread connectivity maintain full local control. Voice commands via Alexa/Google will fail without internet, but manual wall switches still work.
