Heavy-duty brackets use steel at least 1/5-inch thick, support 150+ pounds per pair, and feature reinforced corners. Standard brackets use thinner metal, support 50-75 pounds, and lack gussets. Always check the gauge—lower numbers mean thicker steel.
How many brackets do I need for a 6-foot shelf?
Use three brackets for 6-foot shelves: one at each end and one centered. For loads over 150 pounds or 1-inch thick lumber, add a fourth bracket at the 18-inch mark. This prevents sagging and distributes stress across more studs.
Can these Liberty alternative brackets be used outdoors?
Only brackets with powder-coated or galvanized finishes suit outdoor use. The NEODROP and Balin Designs options handle moisture well. Avoid painted steel outdoors. For permanent exterior mounting, apply silicone sealant around screw heads to prevent water intrusion.

Ratings reflect testing methodology and safety margins. A 160-pound rating often means per-bracket capacity, while 200+ pounds indicates per-pair capacity. Also, deeper brackets (12-16 inches) create more leverage stress, requiring higher safety deratings than compact 6-inch models.
