Does Loctite make traditional contact cement?
No, Loctite doesn't manufacture traditional neoprene-based contact cement. Their Power Grab line is construction adhesive that bonds when materials are pressed together, but it doesn't create the instant permanent bond of true contact cement. For veneers and laminates, choose DAP Weldwood or Bondtech.
What's the difference between contact cement and construction adhesive?
Contact cement forms an instant, permanent bond when two coated surfaces touch. Construction adhesive grabs gradually and requires clamping or bracing. Contact cement uses solvents and works on thin materials; construction adhesive is water/solvent-based and fills gaps in building applications.
How long does contact cement take to dry?
Dry time is 15-30 minutes until tacky. Full cure reaches maximum strength in 24-72 hours. Humidity and temperature affect drying—warm, dry conditions speed it up. Always wait until both surfaces are dry to the touch but still tacky before joining.
Can I use contact cement on plastic?
It depends on the plastic. Contact cement bonds well to hard plastics like ABS, PVC, and laminates. It will melt styrofoam, polystyrene, and some foam boards. Test a small area first. For flexible plastics, use a plastic-specific adhesive instead.
How do I remove contact cement?
Before curing, use mineral spirits or acetone. After curing, mechanical removal is required—sand, scrape, or heat with a heat gun to soften. Solvents won't dissolve cured neoprene cement. Always wear gloves and work in ventilated areas when removing.
Why is my contact cement not sticking?
Common causes: surfaces not clean/dry, applied too thick, joined before tacky, or incompatible materials. Apply thin coats to both surfaces, wait 15-20 minutes until dry but tacky, then press firmly. Once bonded, it cannot be repositioned.
