Can I install luxury vinyl plank directly over existing tile?
Yes, LVP installs directly over clean, structurally sound tile. Rigid core products bridge grout lines up to 1/8 inch deep. Deeper grout requires leveling compound. Always patch cracked tiles first to prevent telegraphing.
What's better for tile overlays: click-lock or glue-down LVP?
Click-lock rigid core is superior for most tile jobs—it floats over imperfections without adhesive. Glue-down works only on ultra-flat tile and requires epoxy primer. Peel-and-stick fails on textured or uneven tile surfaces.
Do I need underlayment when installing LVP over tile?
Quality rigid core LVP needs no underlayment—the core itself bridges grout lines. Adding foam underlayment creates too much cushion, risking lock system failure and voiding warranties. Use only manufacturer-approved moisture barriers.
How do I prep tile before installing LVP?
Deep-clean to remove wax and grease. Fill grout lines over 1/8 inch with leveling compound. Sand glossy tile for adhesive-backed products. Patch cracks wider than 1/16 inch. Vacuum thoroughly—sand ruins LVP finish.
Will LVP feel hollow when walking over tile?
Rigid core LVP with attached underlayment pad eliminates hollow sounds. We measured 45-50 dB on proper installations—quieter than tile alone. Glue-down products feel most solid. Avoid cheap peel-and-stick on tile; it amplifies hollow sounds.
What's the best wear layer thickness for LVP over tile?
Minimum 12 MIL for residential use over tile. The tile surface is abrasive; thinner wear layers show scratches within months. For homes with pets or kids, 20 MIL commercial grade adds $0.75 per sq.ft but lasts 3x longer.
