Can these masonry bits drill through rebar?
No. Masonry bits are designed for concrete, brick, and block—not steel. Hitting rebar will instantly destroy the carbide tip. Use rebar locators before drilling, and switch to metal-drilling bits if encountering steel.
What's the difference between percussion and non-percussion bits?
Percussion bits have hardened steel bodies that withstand hammer drill impacts. Non-percussion bits crack under this stress. Always use percussion-rated bits in hammer mode; you can use them in regular rotation mode, but not vice versa.
How long should a quality masonry bit last?
In residential concrete, expect 50-100 holes per bit. In softer brick or block, 150+ holes. The DEWALT bits consistently hit the high end of this range, while budget brands often fail at 20-30 holes in hard concrete.
Are hex shank bits better than round shank?
Hex is faster for tool-free changes with impact drivers. Round shanks grip tighter in traditional drill chucks and cost less. For hammer drills, round is fine. For cordless multi-tools, hex adds convenience worth the small premium.
Can I use these bits for ceramic tile?
Specialty glass and tile bits work better—their spear points prevent cracking. Standard masonry bits can chip tile edges. The TITGGI and DYRECELVE sets claim tile capability, but use lowest speed and a guide for best results.
Why do my masonry bits smoke while drilling?
Smoking indicates either excessive speed, insufficient pressure, or dull bits. Reduce RPM to 1,000 or less, apply firm steady pressure, and replace bits that show wear. Proper dust extraction via flutes also prevents overheating.
