Can I use a regular wood miter saw to cut concrete?
Never use a wood miter saw for concrete. The RPM is too high, blades aren't compatible, and the saw isn't sealed against silica dust. Concrete saws run at lower RPMs (3,000-4,500) with diamond blades and have enclosed motors to prevent dust damage. Using a wood saw voids warranties and creates safety hazards.
What's the difference between wet and dry concrete cutting?
Wet cutting uses water to suppress dust and cool the blade, extending blade life 3x and meeting OSHA silica rules. Dry cutting is faster to set up but requires a respirator and dust extractor. Wet cutting is mandatory indoors; dry cutting works for quick outdoor cuts with proper PPE.
How deep can these electric concrete saws actually cut?
10-inch saws cut ~4 inches, 12-14 inch saws cut 4-5/8 to 5-1/8 inches, and 16-inch saws cut up to 6 inches. Ring saws achieve 8-12 inches from one side by rotating the blade around a ring. Always verify actual cut depth—manufacturer claims vary by 1/4 to 1/2 inch in real use.
Do I need special blades for cutting concrete with rebar?
Yes. Use segmented diamond blades rated for 'reinforced concrete.' Continuous-rim blades cut tile and masonry but bog down in rebar. Look for laser-welded segments with soft bonds that expose fresh diamonds when cutting steel. Cheap blades wear out in 10-20 feet; premium blades last 100+ feet in rebar.
Are electric concrete saws powerful enough for professional work?
Modern 15-20A electric saws match or exceed gas power for 90% of jobs. The Evolution R14DCT's 20A motor cuts 5-1/8 inches without stalling. Electric saws maintain constant RPM under load, while gas saws lose power as tanks empty. For indoor work and consistent cuts, electric is superior.
What safety gear is required when cutting concrete?
OSHA requires a NIOSH-approved N95 respirator minimum—P100 is better—for silica dust. Add safety glasses, hearing protection, steel-toed boots, and cut-resistant gloves. For dry cutting, use a dust extractor hood. Wet cutting still requires splash-resistant eyewear and rubber boots to prevent electrical hazards.
