Can oscillating tool blades really cut hardened steel?
Yes, but only carbide-tipped blades. Standard titanium or bi-metal blades dull immediately on hardened steel. Carbide blades like the Diablo Amped or EZARC Obsidian cut hardened bolts, nails, and Grade 8 fasteners effectively when used at high oscillation speeds.
How many cuts will I get from a carbide blade?
In our testing, premium carbide blades delivered 50-70 cuts through 1/4" steel before significant dulling. Budget carbide achieved 35-45 cuts. Titanium blades managed only 8-12 cuts on the same material. Your results vary based on cutting speed, pressure, and material hardness.
What's the difference between TiAlN coating and standard carbide?
TiAlN (titanium aluminum nitride) adds a hard, lubricious coating that reduces friction and heat buildup. In stainless steel cutting, TiAlN blades lasted 40% longer and ran 150ยฐF cooler than uncoated carbide. The coating adds cost but pays off in extended blade life and cleaner cuts.
Will these blades fit my oscillating tool?
All blades listed feature Universal Fit designs compatible with major brands: Dewalt, Milwaukee, Bosch, Ryobi, Makita, Fein, Rockwell, Wen, and Worx. Some include multiple adapter types. Check your tool's mounting system (OIS, Starlock, or Quick Release) to confirm.
Why do my metal-cutting blades break so quickly?
Three causes: excessive pressure (let the blade do the work), insufficient oscillation speed (metal needs 18,000+ OPM), and wrong blade material (using titanium on hardened steel). Carbide blades withstand higher loads but still require proper technique: light pressure, high speed, and intermittent cooling.
Can I use the same blade for metal and wood?
Carbide metal blades cut wood effectively but leave a rougher finish than dedicated wood blades. The aggressive tooth pattern designed for metal shears wood fibers. For fine woodworking, switch blades. For demolition work, one carbide blade handles both materials adequately.
