Can I mount pegboard directly to concrete?
No—direct adhesive mounting fails under tool weight. Use masonry anchors (Tapcon screws or sleeve anchors) drilled into the concrete. For best results, install pressure-treated furring strips with anchors, then mount pegboard to the strips.
What anchors work best for concrete pegboard?
1/4-inch diameter Tapcon screws or sleeve anchors rated for 100+ pounds each. Use four anchors per 24x24-inch panel minimum, positioned 2 inches from edges. Avoid plastic anchors—they pull out under load.
Metal vs. plastic pegboard for concrete walls?
Metal is superior for concrete. It supports 3-5x more weight, resists moisture from concrete, and won't crack from temperature changes. Plastic flexes, causing anchors to loosen over time.
Do I need a vapor barrier behind basement pegboard?
Yes—install 1/2-inch foam board or 6-mil plastic sheeting between concrete and pegboard. This prevents moisture transfer that causes rust on metal panels and mold on stored items.
How far apart should concrete anchors be spaced?
Maximum 16 inches apart in a grid pattern, with anchors no less than 2 inches from panel edges. This distributes load evenly and prevents panel flex that stresses individual anchors.
Can I install pegboard on cinder block walls?
Yes—use the same masonry anchors, but drill into the solid web areas of the block, not the hollow cores. Avoid mortar joints. For best holding power, position anchors in block centers.
