What's the difference between PTFE and silicone pipe tape?
PTFE tape seals threaded joints by filling thread gaps—it's non-adhesive and relies on compression. Silicone tape is self-fusing, stretching and bonding to itself for emergency repairs on any surface. Use PTFE for new installations; silicone for temporary burst pipe fixes.
How many times should I wrap plumber's tape around threads?
Wrap 3-4 times for 1/2" fittings, 4-5 times for 3/4" and larger. Always wrap clockwise facing the thread end, keeping tension consistent. Too few wraps leak; too many prevent proper tightening. High-density tapes require fewer wraps than standard versions.
Can I use white PTFE tape on gas lines?
No—white PTFE is for water only. Gas lines require yellow gas-rated PTFE tape that's thicker and certified for fuel gases. Using white tape on gas lines creates serious safety hazards and violates plumbing codes. Always verify tape certification before gas work.
How long does pipe tape last once applied?
Properly installed PTFE tape lasts the life of the fitting—20+ years. It doesn't degrade unless exposed to incompatible chemicals. Self-fusing silicone tape is rated for 5 years outdoors. Pipe wrap tape typically needs replacement every 10 years depending on UV exposure.
Is thicker pipe tape better than thin tape?
Thicker isn't always better. High-density thin tape creates better thread engagement than thick, low-density tape. For thread sealing, density matters more than thickness. For external pipe protection, 10Mil thickness provides superior impact and moisture resistance.
What's the best pipe tape for PVC pipes?
Use PTFE thread seal tape on PVC threaded fittings, but apply carefully—over-tightening cracks PVC. For non-threaded PVC leaks, self-fusing silicone tape works best. Avoid pipe wrap tape on PVC pressure pipes as it can mask developing failures.
