Will a plumbing snake damage my pipes?
Properly used, no. Use 1/4" cable for 1-1/2" pipes, 5/16" for 2" pipes. Never force the cable. Let the auger head do the work. PVC pipes handle snakes fine if you avoid aggressive power drilling.
How do I clean the snake after use?
Run the cable through a bucket of soapy water, then wipe dry with old towels. Spray with WD-40 to prevent rust. Never store wet. Wear gloves—used cables carry bacteria.
Can I use a sink snake on my toilet?
Only if it's specifically labeled toilet-safe. Standard sink snakes scratch porcelain. Look for models with a protective vinyl or rubber sleeve that shields the bowl from metal cable.
What's better: manual or drill-powered?
Start manual to learn feel and control. Add a drill adapter later. Drill power helps with tough clogs but increases kinking risk. Electric machines are overkill for most DIYers.
How often should I snake my drains?
Only when clogged. Preventative snaking isn't necessary. If you're clearing the same drain every few months, you have a bigger problem—call a plumber to camera the line.
Why does my cable keep kinking?
You're pushing too hard or using too large a diameter for the pipe. Always keep tension on the cable during retrieval. Auto-feed mechanisms prevent most kinking issues.
