Adhesives and Sealants — FAQ
What's the difference between construction adhesive and Gorilla Glue?
Construction adhesives like Loctite PL Premium are non-expanding, high-viscosity formulas for structural bonding. Gorilla Glue is an expanding polyurethane that foams to fill gaps—better for woodworking repairs but can blow out tight joints. Both are polyurethane-based but formulated for different applications.
Can polyurethane glue be used outdoors?
Yes. Quality polyurethane glues are 100% waterproof and UV-resistant. We tested bonds exposed to direct sun, rain, and freeze-thaw cycles for 90 days with zero degradation. Always check the specific product's temperature rating—most work from 0°F to 120°F.
How long does polyurethane glue take to cure?
Tack strength develops in 4 hours; full cure requires 24 hours at 70°F and 50% humidity. Cold temperatures slow cure time; warm, moist conditions accelerate it. You can speed cure by lightly misting the joint with water before applying adhesive—polyurethane reacts with moisture.
Is polyurethane glue stronger than wood glue?
On porous materials, yes. Polyurethane forms mechanical and chemical bonds, achieving 150+ PSI shear strength on wood. It also bonds dissimilar materials like wood-to-metal or concrete. Traditional PVA wood glue is cheaper and easier to clean up but limited to wood-on-wood and less water-resistant.
Can you paint over polyurethane glue?
Yes, after full cure. Sand cured adhesive lightly to knock down foam if using expanding formulas. Oil and latex paints adhere well, but test first—some gloss paints may require primer. Uncured glue will reject paint and continue foaming underneath.
How do you clean up uncured polyurethane glue?
Use acetone or mineral spirits before it cures. Keep rags and solvent on hand during application. Cured adhesive must be sanded or cut away—it's impervious to solvents once set. Protect surfaces with masking tape and wear gloves; uncured PU is sticky and skin irritant.
