Can I really get a portable air conditioner for under $100?
True compressor-based portable ACs start around $300. The "under $100" category is dominated by evaporative coolers (swamp coolers) like the MEPTY model, which cool effectively in dry climates but don't work in humidity. For legitimate AC power, expect to spend $300-400 minimum.
What's the difference between ASHRAE and SACC BTU ratings?
ASHRAE ratings are outdated lab tests under perfect conditions. SACC (Seasonally Adjusted Cooling Capacity) reflects real-world performance with infiltration air, part-load conditions, and duct heat. A unit rated 8,000 BTU ASHRAE might only deliver 5,000 BTU SACC—always use the lower number for sizing.
Do portable ACs need to be drained constantly?
It depends on humidity. In dry climates, self-evaporative models recycle moisture out the exhaust hose. In humid areas, you may empty the tank every 4-6 hours. Continuous drain kits (included with most units) let you run a hose to a floor drain for hassle-free operation.
Will a portable AC cool multiple rooms?
