Can I really install a rain shower head myself?
Absolutely. Most models use standard 1/2-inch NPT threads that screw directly onto your existing shower arm. Basic installations need only thread tape and an adjustable wrench, taking 10-15 minutes. Always turn off water supply first and check for leaks after installation.
What tools will I actually need?
At minimum: adjustable wrench, plumber's tape (Teflon tape), and a rag to protect finishes. Some models include a small wrench. For extension arms or ceiling mounts, you may need a drill and anchors. Never use pipe dope on showerhead threads—tape works better.
How do I know if my plumbing is compatible?
Remove your existing showerhead and measure the threaded pipe (shower arm). Standard US size is 1/2-inch NPT, which fits 99% of replacement heads. If you have a non-standard size, adapters cost $3-5 at hardware stores. Check your home's water pressure—below 40 PSI benefits from 'high pressure' designed models.
Why does my new rain shower head have low pressure?
First, remove the flow restrictor (a small plastic disk inside the connection)—it's legally required but reduces pressure. Clean any debris from inlet screens. Check that valves are fully open. If pressure remains low, your home may need a pressure regulator adjustment or the showerhead design doesn't suit your plumbing.
What's the difference between 2.5 GPM and 1.8 GPM?
GPM (gallons per minute) measures water flow. Federal law limits new showerheads to 2.5 GPM maximum. 1.8 GPM models save water but feel less immersive. California requires 1.8 GPM. For DIYers, 2.5 GPM provides better rainfall effect; remove and clean the flow restrictor annually to maintain performance.
Should I choose ceiling or wall mount?
Wall mounts install in minutes using existing plumbing. Ceiling mounts deliver true rainfall experience but require access to ceiling joists and potentially new pipe runs—feasible for DIYers during full bathroom remodels only. For most, an adjustable wall-mounted arm achieves similar effect with 90% less work.
