How many lumens do I need for a two-car garage?
Aim for 3000-4000 lumens total. Two 2200LM fixtures or one 7500LM unit provides excellent coverage. For detailed work, add task lighting at benches for 500-800 additional lumens.
Are LED shop lights worth it over fluorescent?
Yes. LEDs use 50% less power, last 3x longer, turn on instantly in cold temps, and contain no mercury. A $60 LED set pays for itself in 2-3 years through energy savings alone.
Can I hardwire these plug-in lights?
Most corded models can be hardwired by removing the plug, but this voids ETL certification. Buy hardwire-specific models instead. Our picks include both options—check product details before purchasing.
What's the difference between T5 and T8?
T5 is 5/8 inch diameter, T8 is 1 inch. T5 runs cooler and more efficient; T8 offers broader compatibility with older fixtures. For new installations, T5 provides better performance per dollar.
Will 6500K lights cause eye strain?
No more than 5000K. The key is adequate diffusion. Look for frosted or clear covers that spread light evenly at 120° beam angles. Avoid exposed LED diodes that create harsh glare and shadows.
How much will I save on electric bills?
