What's the difference between SET-3G and SET-XP epoxy?
SET-3G offers faster 45-minute cure times for general purpose anchoring. SET-XP provides superior performance in cracked concrete and seismic applications with enhanced ductility. Both meet ICC-ESR standards, but SET-XP carries higher load ratings for critical structural connections.
Can I use Simpson epoxy in cold weather?
SET-3G requires minimum 40°F substrate temperature. SET-XP performs down to 35°F. Below these temperatures, the epoxy won't cure properly and bond strength suffers dramatically. Use wedge anchors or wait for warmer conditions in cold climates.
Do I need a special dispensing tool for the cartridges?
Yes. Simpson epoxies require the EPX dispensing gun (sold separately). Standard caulk guns cannot generate sufficient pressure for proper mixing. The EPX tool ensures correct 1:1 ratio dispensing for both side-by-side and coaxial cartridges.
How many anchors can I install per 22-ounce cartridge?
A 22-ounce cartridge installs approximately 15-20 anchors depending on hole diameter and depth. A 1/2-inch diameter hole 4 inches deep uses about 1.2 ounces. Always factor 10% waste for cleanup and initial purging of the mixing nozzle.
Are structural screws code-approved for framing?
Yes. Simpson SD screws are IRC-approved and carry ICC-ESR reports for wood framing applications. They meet or exceed 10d common nail capacity in standard framing lumber and are permitted for shear walls, joist hangers, and structural connections without pre-drilling.
What's the shelf life of unopened epoxy cartridges?
Unopened Simpson epoxy cartridges have an 18-month shelf life from manufacture date when stored between 50-75°F. Check the date code on packaging. Once opened, use within 30 days. Coaxial cartridges have shorter shelf life than side-by-side designs due to potential internal mixing.
