What's the difference between RGB and RGBIC strips?
RGB strips display one color at a time across the entire length. RGBIC (Independent Control) strips have multiple IC chips allowing different colors simultaneously on one line, creating rainbow effects and segmented scenes perfect for dynamic kitchen lighting.
Can I cut these strips to fit my kitchen?
Most strips have marked cut points every 2-4 inches. After cutting, you must solder new leads or use connector clips to reconnect. Some brands offer solderless connectors, but we found soldering provides the most reliable connection for permanent installations.
Do I need a hub for these smart strips to work?
No. All tested strips connect directly to WiFi or Bluetooth. However, for SmartThings integration, the Kasa strip benefits from a hub for advanced automation. Alexa and Google Assistant work directly through your existing smart speakers.
How do I handle corners in my kitchen?
Use L-shaped connectors for 90-degree turns, or create a loop with extra strip length. For inside corners, carefully bend the strip at cut points. RGBIC strips require special corner connectors to maintain individual LED control—soldering is often more reliable than snap connectors.
Are these safe to use near sinks and stoves?
Look for IP65 or higher ratings for water resistance near sinks. All tested strips handle steam and splashes, but direct water contact requires waterproof coating. Keep power supplies and connections at least 12 inches from water sources and avoid direct flame contact.
What's the typical lifespan of smart LED strips?
Most quality strips last 25,000-50,000 hours. Running 8 hours daily, that's 8-17 years. Heat is the main killer—ensure proper ventilation, especially near stoves. The Kasa strip's 25,000-hour rating is conservative; we expect 40,000+ hours in typical kitchen use.
