Can I cut outdoor LED strips to length?
Yes, but only at marked cut points (typically every 2-4 inches). After cutting, you must seal the cut end with waterproof silicone or end caps, or moisture will destroy the strip. RGBIC strips lose segment control beyond the cut point.
What's the difference between IP65 and IP68?
IP65 protects against water jets from any direction—safe for rain and splashes. IP68 allows continuous submersion beyond 1 meter, making it suitable for pools and fountains. For most patios and eaves, IP65 is sufficient.
Will these work with 5GHz WiFi networks?
No—virtually all smart LED strips require 2.4GHz WiFi. Most dual-band routers broadcast both networks. If you have separate network names, connect your phone to the 2.4GHz band during setup, then you can return to 5GHz for normal use.
How long do outdoor LED strips last?
Quality outdoor strips last 30,000-50,000 hours (10+ years at 8 hours nightly). UV exposure and temperature extremes degrade cheaper strips faster. IP68-rated models typically outlast IP65 by 2-3 years in harsh climates.
Can I connect multiple strips together?
Most manufacturers advise against connecting more than two strips due to voltage drop and power supply limitations. For longer runs, use separate power sources or buy longer single strips. Govee's RGBIC strips cannot be extended while maintaining segment control.
Do I need a hub for these to work?
No—WiFi strips connect directly to your router and work through cloud services. Bluetooth strips connect phone-to-strip without hubs. Some systems offer optional hubs for local network control when internet is down, but they're not required.
