What's the difference between RGB and RGBIC?
RGB displays one color at a time across the entire strip. RGBIC uses independent chips to show multiple colors simultaneously, creating gradients and patterns. RGBIC costs more but enables advanced effects.
Do I need a hub for these strips?
WiFi and Matter strips connect directly to your router—no hub needed. Bluetooth strips require your phone to be in range. Some ecosystems like Philips Hue need hubs, but none in our under-$75 test group do.
Can I cut these strips to length?
Most strips have marked cut points every few inches. Cutting elsewhere destroys functionality. Kasa and GE offer adjustable-length designs that let you trim without waste. Always measure twice before cutting.
Will these work with 5GHz WiFi?
Most smart strips use 2.4GHz only. If your router combines bands under one SSID, disable band steering or create a separate 2.4GHz network during setup. Matter-compatible strips may support 5GHz in the future.
How do I calculate how many feet I need?
Measure linear distance, then add 10% for corners and vertical runs. A 12x12 bedroom with crown molding needs roughly 50-60 feet. For TVs, match the strip length to your screen size—Govee's TV model fits 70-80 inch sets perfectly.
Can I install these outdoors?
None of our under-$75 picks are IP-rated for outdoor use. For covered patios, you can install them temporarily, but moisture voids warranties. Look for IP65+ rated strips if you need permanent outdoor lighting.
