Smart Home — FAQ
What is Matter and why does it matter for smart plugs?
Matter is a universal smart home standard ensuring devices work across all platforms. It future-proofs your investment and eliminates ecosystem lock-in. Matter plugs work natively with Apple Home, Alexa, Google Home, and SmartThings without separate apps.
Do I need a hub for these smart plugs?
No. All tested plugs connect directly to 2.4G Wi-Fi. Matter devices perform best with a Thread border router but function without one. Most modern mesh routers include Thread support.
Can I use smart plugs with 5G Wi-Fi networks?
No. All tested models require 2.4G Wi-Fi only. Most dual-band routers broadcast both simultaneously—connect plugs to the 2.4G SSID. This lower frequency provides better range through walls.
What's the difference between Kasa and Tapo smart plugs?
Both are TP-Link brands. Kasa focuses on traditional Wi-Fi plugs with IFTTT support. Tapo emphasizes newer tech like Matter, compact designs, and simplified setup. Tapo is the future-focused line.
Are these smart plugs safe for high-power appliances?
Yes, if rated appropriately. All 15A/1800W plugs handle most appliances. Never exceed the rated amperage printed on the plug. For devices like space heaters, verify the appliance's draw stays under 1800W.
Can I use these smart plugs outdoors?
No. None of our tested models carry weatherproof IP ratings. Outdoor use requires plugs specifically rated for wet locations. Indoor use only unless the packaging explicitly states outdoor certification.
