Smart Home — FAQ
Can I install a smart thermostat myself or do I need an electrician?
Most homeowners can install low-voltage smart thermostats in 15-30 minutes using included guides. Turn off power at the breaker, photograph existing wiring, and follow the app step-by-step. High-voltage systems require an electrician.
What is a C-wire and does my house have one?
A C-wire (common wire) provides constant 24V power. Remove your old thermostat and look for a wire connected to the 'C' terminal. If absent, some thermostats include a power extender kit or run on batteries with limited features.
Which smart thermostats work with Apple HomeKit?
The ecobee Premium, Enhanced, and Essential models support native Siri control. The meross thermostat works with Apple Home through Matter. Google Nest requires third-party hubs for HomeKit integration, which we don't recommend.
How much money will a smart thermostat actually save?
Our tests show 15-23% reduction in heating/cooling costs, typically $120-$250 annually depending on climate and usage. Energy Star models provide the most accurate reporting. Most users recoup the cost in 2-3 months at under-$25 pricing.
Do smart thermostats work when Wi-Fi goes down?
Yes, they function as programmable thermostats using locally stored schedules. Remote app control and voice commands require internet, but temperature control, scheduling, and basic occupancy detection continue working offline.
What's the difference between the ecobee Premium and Enhanced models?
The Premium includes a Smart Sensor and built-in air quality monitor. The Enhanced supports SmartSensors but lacks air quality tracking. Both offer identical scheduling, voice control, and energy reporting. Choose Premium for whole-home sensing.
