How do swamp coolers work?
Swamp coolers use evaporative cooling: a fan pulls hot air through water-saturated pads, evaporating water and lowering air temperature by 15-30°F. They work best in dry climates under 50% humidity and require ventilation to prevent moisture buildup.
Can I use a swamp cooler in high humidity?
Swamp coolers lose effectiveness above 60% humidity since air can't hold more moisture. In humid climates, they feel like fans rather than AC. Consider portable AC units instead if you live in consistently humid areas.
How much water do swamp coolers use?
A typical unit uses 3-7 gallons per hour depending on CFM and tank size. Our 8-gallon test models ran 4-7 hours on high. Water usage increases with temperature and airflow speed.
Are ice packs worth it?
Yes. Ice packs lower outlet temperatures by 10-15°F for the first 1-2 hours, providing peak cooling when you need it most. They're essential for maximum performance in extreme heat above 95°F.
What's the difference between swamp coolers and portable AC?
Swamp coolers use water evaporation and require ventilation, using 75% less energy. Portable ACs use refrigerant, need exhaust hoses, but work in any humidity. Swamp coolers are cheaper to run but climate-dependent.
How often should I clean my swamp cooler?
Clean the tank and pads weekly during heavy use to prevent mold and mineral buildup. Replace pads every 1-2 seasons. Our test units with removable tanks were easiest to maintain.
