How many wraps of teflon tape should I use?
Use 2-3 wraps for high-density professional tape, or 4-6 wraps for standard economy tape. Wrap clockwise facing the pipe end, stretching tape slightly for better adhesion. More wraps don't guarantee better seals and can crack fittings.
Can I use white teflon tape on gas lines?
No. Building codes require yellow gas-rated tape for propane and natural gas. White tape lacks the density and chemical resistance for hydrocarbons. Using incorrect tape creates serious safety hazards and fails inspections.
What's the difference between high-density and standard tape?
High-density tape contains more PTFE per inch, creating tighter seals with fewer wraps. It's 30-40% heavier, resists tearing better, and handles higher pressures. Standard tape works for basic water connections but requires more material.
Should I use tape or pipe dope?
Use PTFE tape for most residential threaded connections. Pipe dope (thread sealant compound) works better for large-diameter pipes, fuel oil, or when connecting dissimilar metals. Many pros apply tape first, then a light coat of dope for critical connections.
Does teflon tape expire?
PTFE tape has no true expiration date but loses effectiveness after 5+ years. Old tape becomes brittle, tears easily, and adheres poorly. Store in a sealed bag away from UV light and extreme temperatures for maximum shelf life.
Why is my taped connection still leaking?
Common causes include: wrapping counter-clockwise, using too few wraps, crossing threads during installation, or reusing damaged fittings. Remove old tape completely, clean threads with a wire brush, and reapply fresh tape with proper tension.
