Can I use these lamps in uncovered outdoor areas?
No. None of these lamps have IP ratings for rain exposure. Use only in fully covered areas like porches, patios with solid roofs, or under waterproof canopies. Direct moisture will damage the electronics and create shock hazards.
What's the difference between indoor and outdoor lighting?
Outdoor fixtures require IP ratings (IP44 minimum), UV-resistant materials, and weather-sealed wiring. These torchieres are indoor-rated but can work in protected spaces where they won't get wet. Always use GFCI outlets.
How bright should an outdoor torchiere be?
Aim for 1500-3000 lumens for covered outdoor spaces. 1800 lumens (like our winner) works for 150-200 sq ft areas. Go brighter for larger spaces or if competing with streetlights. Dimmable models offer flexibility.
Are LED torchieres safe for covered outdoor use?
Yes, if kept dry. LEDs run cool, reducing fire risk. However, the power supply and controls must stay protected. Check that metal housings are grounded and cords have no damage. Unplug during storms.
Can I leave these outside year-round?
Only in temperature-controlled, fully enclosed spaces like sunrooms. For covered but open patios, bring them indoors during extreme weather, heavy rain, or winter. Condensation and temperature swings will shorten lifespan.
What's the best alternative for true outdoor use?
For uncovered areas, use IP65-rated bollard lights, outdoor post lamps, or string lights. For torchiere-style lighting, consider outdoor-rated wall sconces or pendant lights installed by an electrician.
