What width transition strip do I need for laminate flooring?
Most residential laminate-to-carpet transitions need 1.57-inch strips. For laminate-to-tile or gaps over 3mm, choose 2-inch width. Measure your actual gap and add 0.5 inches for proper coverage.
Can I cut vinyl transition strips to fit my doorway?
Yes. Use sharp utility scissors or a utility knife with a straight edge. Cut slightly long, test fit, then trim for a precise finish. Always cut from the backside to avoid scratching the finish.
Will self-adhesive strips stick to concrete floors?
They stick to clean, sealed concrete. For porous or dusty concrete, apply a concrete primer first or use supplementary construction adhesive. Roughen smooth concrete with 80-grit sandpaper for better bond.
How do I transition laminate to carpet with different heights?
Use a tapered transition strip rated for your height difference (up to 5mm). Install the strip's high side on the laminate and let it taper down to the carpet. Press firmly and avoid stretching the carpet during installation.
Can these strips be painted to match my floor?
Vinyl and PVC strips accept paint poorly without specialty primers. Instead, choose a color-matched strip initially. If you must paint, use a bonding primer for plastic and 100% acrylic floor paint, then seal with clear polyurethane.
How long do vinyl transition strips last?
Quality vinyl strips last 5-10 years in residential traffic. Direct sunlight and heavy commercial use reduce lifespan to 3-5 years. Replace when edges lift, the surface cracks, or the color fades significantly.
