Which side of waterproof underlayment faces up?
Quality waterproof underlayment has identical coatings on both sides, eliminating guesswork. If your fabric has different textures, place the smoother, more coated side upward to resist gravel abrasion. Always check manufacturer guidelines.
How much overlap do I need between sheets?
For beginners, a 12-inch overlap is recommended to prevent shifting and ensure continuous coverage. Secure the overlap every 12-18 inches with staples or stakes. Wider overlaps are more forgiving if your alignment isn't perfect.
Can I install underlayment over existing grass or soil?
Yes, but preparation matters. Mow grass short and remove large rocks. For best results, scalp the vegetation and lightly compact the soil. The fabric will smother remaining growth while providing a stable base for gravel.
How deep should gravel be over underlayment?
For pedestrian paths, 2-3 inches is sufficient. Driveways and parking areas need 4-6 inches of compacted gravel. Beginners should use 3/4-inch crushed stone as the base layer for better interlocking and stability.
Will weeds grow through commercial-grade fabric?
